Blocked terms

The list of words the relay replaces in page addresses and event text, and how to use your own list for a website.

Blocked terms are the words the relay replaces with page before Meta sees an event: in page addresses and in an event's content name, type and category. A page at /surrogacy-application reaches Meta as /page-application.

They only apply while Remove health terms from page addresses is on in the website's privacy settings. It is on by default.

Walkthrough Add your own blocked terms 1 / 5
Step 1: On the website's page, click Blocked terms. Step 2: These words are replaced with "page" in addresses and event text before anything reaches Meta. Step 3: Type the words to add. Separate several with commas. Step 4: Click Add. The site now uses its own list, starting from the defaults plus your words. Step 5: Remove a word with its cross, or go back to the default list at any time.

On the website's page, click Blocked terms.

Click Add. The site now uses its own list, starting from the defaults plus your words.

The default list

Every website starts with a list of 37 health terms, including clinic, doctor, patient, therapy, treatment, diagnosis, pregnancy, fertility, ivf, embryo, surrogacy, egg-donor and sperm-donation. Open Blocked terms on any website to see them all.

Matching ignores case and works on whole words in the address, and the version of a term without hyphens is caught too: blocking egg-donor also catches eggdonor.

Use your own list

  1. Open the website from Websites and click Blocked terms.
  2. Under Add terms, type one or more words, separated by commas, and click Add.

Adding a word switches the website to its own list: the defaults plus your words. Words are saved in lowercase, and repeats are ignored.

To remove a word, click Edit the list first if the website still uses the defaults, then the cross next to the word.

Go back to the defaults

Click Go back to defaults and confirm. The website's own words are removed and it follows the default list again, including any terms added to it later.

Choosing words

  • Add the words in your own page addresses that describe a condition or treatment: service names, procedures, specialist areas.
  • Add both spellings you use, like ivf and in-vitro.
  • Do not add words that appear in every address, like your brand. Every page would then look the same in Meta.
  • Check the result in the website's analytics, under Pages. It shows addresses as Meta received them.
